Magicicadas emerge by the thousands in order to satiate predators.  It has been estimated that 40% of the population will be eaten by enemies, another 40% will be destroyed by weather, and the remaining 20% actually survives to reproduce the next generation.

Magicicada septendecim

A pair of males singing on a tree branch.  When thousands get together, the sound becomes overwhelming.  Note the second male (bottom) with its wings slightly open and its abdomen raised.  He was in the middle of striking a musical note.
